Here are my thoughts on why Kikyo seems so bitter and evil to Inuyasha.. and the reason why I really like her more.
But I believe, Kikyo is misunderstood. For me, people interpret her actions WRONG. She's really in love with Inuyasha... And true, she found out that Naraku is the one who engineered the whole betrayal thing. But she found that out when she was already DEAD! She can't turn back time!
What would you feel if you've just discovered that the man you loved, the man you accused wrongly and punished, since it's her duty and she had no choice... was actually innocent.... BUT you discovered it when you were already dead! Do you really think she's not hurting?
I think she suffers the most. And I think the rason why she's cold to Inuyasha.. is because she doesn't want Inuyasha to keep on loving her. SHE KNOWS that Kagome loves her.. so she stays way from Inuyasha.. she hurts him... even though she loves him.
She is not evil. She was tormented.. she died thinking the man he loved the most betrayed her. When she discovered the truth, she's already dead so it's impossible for her to continue her relationship with Inuyasha, and she meets this kind, generous, loving girl, her reincarnation that deeply loves Inuyasha. AND she's too KIND to do harm to them.. she now she wil only cause a problem between Kagome and Inuyasha's affair.
So she stays away and keeps her "feelings" to herself (if she has feelings.. since she's dead.. but I think she has feelings) .. her agony.. all to herself. She has no family, she certainly can't talk to Naraku.. she's suffering. That's why I like her. I always feel her hurt yet she does not show it. She's strong.. because she can set Inuyasha free..Can't you see how lonesome it is when there are scenes showing Kikyo. She ONLY talks to the spirits around HER... how fun would that be?
It's actually Inuyasha's problem to let go of her. He can't choose between Kagome and Kikyo even though Kikyo stays away from him.
And, I think Kikyo woul gladly accept death given her state.. but she has a mission...

Kikyo's mother trained her to be a priestess since she was a little girl, and as a teenager she became the guardian of the shikon no tama. This made many demons seek her, for the power of the shikon no tama could raise a demons power beyond imagination. Her life was to be dedicated to the jewel, which meant that she could not show any kind of weakness, and she always had to be on her guard, she was known as ‘She who guards the jewel’ and as long as the jewel remained in this world she could not live her life the way she wished. One day, a hanyou named Inuyasha came after the jewel, but of course, Kikyo was ready. Unlike most other demons, she did not kill him. As the days went on, Inuyasha would try to steal the jewel and kikyo would stop him, but never did either actually try to hurt each other. Then, one day, the unthinkable happened, they fell in love. Kikyo offers to use the shikon no tama to make Inuyasha human, and as mortals they could live their lives together. Inuyasha accepts and Kikyo tells him to come to the place they were at, at I think, sunrise. Inuyasha comes and waits for Kikyo, but, Naraku, an evil hanyou, takes the form of Kikyo and attacks Inuyasha, outraged, Inuyasha goes back to the village. A short while later, Kikyo comes and Naraku takes the form of Inuyasha and wounds her, he then takes the jewel back to the village temple. Kikyo hurries to the village in time to see the real Inuyasha attack the village and steal the jewel, she then pines him to a tree with an arrow that bore an entrapment spell. She then peacefully goes to her own death. 50 years later, an ogress revives her, and she sees Inuyasha, after a while of arguing, Kikyo falls from a cliff and Inuyasha thinks she’s dead, but later finds out that she isn’t. Kikyo then decides that she cannot rest in peace until Inuyasha, whom she still thinks killed her, is dead.
